You don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to. — Unknown (via iamashleybrena)
youthmoon asked: Why do we feel dissatisfied with life? What is cause of unhappiness?
There are no gradations for being alive. One person is not more alive than another. We are all intensely and vibrantly alive. But it’s when you mistake your aliveness with your life situation that dissatisfaction occurs.
Your life situation is a combination of linear time, personality, and preferences. You have a past, a present, and a future. You have an individual sense of self that has desires and aversions. Naturally such a life will have its ups and downs. And just as naturally that life will be unfulfilling. No sense of lasting perfection, meaning wholeness, will be found therein.
But your aliveness is your actual life. You can have aliveness without a life situation but you can’t have a life situation without an aliveness there to experience it. Aliveness is primary, life situation is secondary.
The cause of happiness is forgetting what is primary, fixating on the secondary, and trying to find something from the secondary that can only be recognized with the re-discovery of the primary.
The nature of aliveness is awareness. Awareness is the feeling that you exist. Even though you sleep every night and lose all sense of your mind and body, you do not fear sleeping as though it were death. Even when it comes time to wake in the morning, sometimes you cling to the covers and wish to go back within. To simply exist is peaceful.
There is no need to spurn the idea of the life situation and try to destroy or run from it. All you need to do is keep it in its own place and cease to seek something from it that only the recognition of your aliveness can give you.
The life situation is a survival tool of the mind. Use it but don’t be used by it. Awaken to the timeless aliveness that is only ever here and now. After all, when else are you alive but Now?
Through daily practices like meditation and mindfulness, you learn to dissolve your habits of seeking satisfaction or avoiding dissatisfaction from the transient life situation. Then you will know peace.
